Soap is one of the oldest known cleansing agents, with a history spanning thousands of years. The profession of laundrymen was already well established in antiquity. Today, the process is considerably simpler, even when crafting soap by hand. There is no need to extract potash from wood ash; thanks to high-grade starting ingredients, exceptional soaps can be crafted at home using the cold process.
The cold process is simpler than making jam. In essence, fats and oils are melted and mixed with an alkaline lye solution—the resulting saponification reaction yields soap. The ratio of raw ingredients is strictly determined by stoichiometry, making precise measurements and following the recipe imperative.
